“Fools”

I’ve always written poetry. Not all of it is great, and occasionally my poems are inspired largely by a need to have something to publish in our SCA Newsletter.

The following verse was written 28 years ago for the April (Fool’s) issue of “The Equinox”.

Fools

We are the fools, in motley clad; the lunatics and clowns,
Who, japing, follow titled Lords, and caper after Crowns;
Who tumble over, in our haste, whatever words we’ve found,
And utter, masked by waggish japing, sentiments profound.
We are the fools, with addled pate, and wit both slow and quick,
Who mock the mighty, and befool the body politic;
Who scamper in the wake of Kings, and neither gold nor jewels
Will ever alter, not a jot, that God hath made us fools.
