A week or so back I noticed — well, there was no avoiding notice — that my older computer system was having problems. When I’d go to open or save a file, or when I was checking email, I would get “not responding” messages, and the programs would hang up for a bit before finally becoming responsive again. I took my tower in to the computer store and asked them to check all of my drives, and they told me the drives were fine, but that I had some junk software that needed removing and that I might want to upgrade my memory — so I did.
When I got the tower back and reconnected everything, the old system would no longer interface with the new one, so I called and got remote assistance to fix that. Got a bill for that too.
But then on Sunday I got up to discover that my D Drive (on the older system I’d just had in the shop) was no longer reading at all, and that’s where all of my important stuff is stored. A lot of it is backed up, but not everything, and to add insult to injury the old system is again not communicating with the new one. Same problem I just had corrected remotely.
Why do things like this always happen on Sundays when you cannot get help?
I took the computer back into the shop, and it was still under warranty after the repair, but they phoned on Thursday to say the drive was dead. I told them to replace it with a new one, and that I wanted the old one back — just in case an expert might be able to reclaim the files (assuming I can afford to hire one), but this time the Luck Fairy just wasn’t with me, I guess.
God, I hope I can find some of those files elsewhere!! Wish me luck!!
