On Saturday November 5th, 2016 a great man was laid to rest. Rick Hatten, known in the SCA as Earl Richard of Rae Fen, gallant Knight, former King, beloved husband, and good friend was well-loved and well-respected by more people than I can possibly count. He will be long and deservedly remembered.
The verse below was written because I believe in memorializing the people who have touched my heart, earned my respect, and ultimately passed on.
This one is for Earl Richard!
Eulogy for Richard: Ride On
He rode in honor, mounted on a dream,
With love well-armored and in friendship sure,
In vert and argent striding, white and green,
And left a legacy that will endure.
Once Crowned and ever-honored, ever-true,
White-belted and soft-spoken; gallant, kind;
Unstained in Knightly virtue. All too few
Match such a life, by chivalry defined.
He smiled his mirth, and wore a twinkling eye.
In jest he knew no master, and well-made
He strode with strength and took the field to vie,
Where many knew the magic of his blade.
He loved his Lady well, with honest heart,
And unto every Squire passed on his creed,
That they might walk in grace and stand apart
In chivalry with every word and deed.
Bold Richard, stood too briefly, brave and tall,
And passed too soon from our now-grieving realm
Far has he gone ahead beyond us all
To guard the road in maille and shining helm.
Ride on in honor, Richard of Rae Fen,
Along that road, where heroes long have gone,
And may we, there in friendship meet again
When our time comes, in glory, to ride on.
