I haven’t been able to attend as many SCA events lately as desire would have me attending. This is partly due to financial constraints — event prices, gas prices, and tight budgets — partly due to health constraints — just under-agile (at least on wet, slick surfaces), over-worked, over-stressed, and over-committed — but mostly due to mundane annoyances, both expected and unexpected.
I recently realized, however, that if you aren’t physically attending a lot of events some people will assume you’re inactive in the SCA. A month ago at Dreamstone I ran into a lot of people I hadn’t seen in a while, who commented on how much they’d missed seeing me — which is terrific, I mean, it’s nice to be missed, right? — and when I said I just hadn’t been able to make many “events” lately one of them said compassionately that they understood, and that no one blamed me for “taking a step back from the SCA” for a while.
I had to laugh — at the assumption, not at the person, since the comment was well-meant — because I’d just stepped down as Seneschal of the Shire of Sol Haven after 4 years in that office, had just stepped up as Reeve of that group, had been the Chronicler since May of 1988 (NOT a typo, by the way), and was the curent Kingdom Lambent Herald for the Kingdom of Meridies.
So here’s the deal. I’m hoping that things are settling down so that I’ll be able to make it to more events where I can see my friends, volunteer, teach, and occasionally just be lazy. I’m even hoping that my finances will allow me to start going back to attending a few Wars, but if I still don’t show up at an event every week, or twice a month, that doesn’t mean I’ve gone away. Nope. I’m still here, whether or not that’s universally popular ;-), and not planning to vanish.
If you were hoping otherwise, you’re out of luck. LOL. I’m like a cockroach or a case of herpes. You just can’t get rid of me!
If you’re relieved, then I’ll be seeing you — probably at Black Axe and RUM, and definitely at Legends!!
