If Ever I Had Beauty

ctree2Once again….Poetry is written for a variety of reasons, but this one simply popped into my head — or at least the beginning lines did so — while I was out innocently shopping for groceries. I’m not sure why. Something clearly inspired the poem — probably catching my own image in a reflective surface and thinking “Who is that woman, and what has she done to me?” — or maybe it was the soft-spoken elderly woman with whom I interacted that day in a check-out lane — but that will probably remain a mystery. In any case, I hope you enjoy the verse below:

“If Ever I had Beauty”

If ever I had beauty in the spring of golden youth;
If ever I had dreams when dreams still wore the guise of truth;
If ever I had silken limbs, that magic did possess,
The fading traces that remain avail me less and less.

For outer beauty fades with age, and rosy cheeks go pale,
And dreams give up their masquerade when time lifts up the veil,
And silken limbs will wither in the winter breath of time,
Then memory alone remains, an insubstantial mime.

The summer nights of life rush past, and all too soon are gone.
The golden days to silver years will pass the chalice on.
I dream my dreams of valleys, leaving mountaintops unclaimed,
But I remember magic and its mysteries all the same.
