We Are All Volunteers

I write poetry. When the Muse strikes me, I set pen to paper, or start typing, or just keep repeating lines over and over again until I can put them down in a more lasting form. That tends to annoy people, but there you have it!

Sometimes I’m inspired by something beautiful, or noble, or gentle, or humorous, and at other times the inspiration comes as the result of anger, or pain, or frustration. Sometimes the impetus is personal, and sometimes it is born of empathizing when something has happened to another person. I never know until it happens, but that’s probably the way it’s supposed to be.

“We Are All Volunteers”

We are all volunteers in a Dream we once crafted of hopes and ideals that once we embraced,
And our promises given and plans deftly crafted should not be abandoned like rubbish and waste.
If a promise is made it should always be honored in all but the direst exigencies known.
Who will give their word carelessly, though grandly armored or decked out with tributes, by that shall be known.

Though he flies a bold banner; his sword-strike like thunder, and speaks well of chivalry, heels golden spurred.
Though he flatters the Ladies and breaks shields asunder, if you cannot expect him to honor his word,
Then he cannot be trusted when honor would call him to stand forth to answer a desperate need,
And counting upon him to rise for the fallen, will likewise be futile, unlikely indeed.

Though she sews silken gowns or crafts wonders of leather with breathtaking beauty to make the Gods weep,
If then when the need rises in inclement weather you cannot expect her a promise to keep,
Then she will not be there were you turn to her hoping for the service she promised to give in travail,
And for aid in your cause you will find yourself groping through the emptiness left when her promise did fail.

When a vow is forgotten the voices all clatter, that they’re just volunteers and thus cannot be bound,
That their promises somehow are not ones that matter, as though volunteer pledges were nothing but sound.
But we’re all volunteers in a Dream we once crafted of hopes and ideals that once we embraced,
And our promises given and plans deftly crafted should not be abandoned like rubbish and waste.
