Today is Poem in Your Pocket Day. This celebration of poetry began in 2003 in New York City. The American Academy of Poets and other organizations have been promoting this day nationally since 2008. The idea is simple. Keep a poem in you pocket, then share it with others throughout the day.
This is my contribution, written to express my respect for those who create, in a time when too many think only to destroy.
With steady eye the perfect timber sought.
With patient skill the boards are cut and planed.
By calloused hand the chest is satin wrought.
In temperance the wood is richly stained.
With cautious blade the carvings are defined;
The hinges and the latches set with care.
By morning light the box is satin lined
In evening glow we know it to be fair.
The eye will take delight in form and art.
The fingers will rejoice in texture fine.
The beauty of the thing sets it apart,
The wonder of the art and the design
Within the treasures set will rest secure,
And travel to the songs of distant lands
To take no injury, and so endure
Due to unhurried skill and careful hands.
But, making is the challenge, and the hand
That wields the hammer links it to the heart.
Who will create a thing will understand
The crafting is the essence and the art.
